IT'S TRUE: Don Jibaro was a rock celebrity in the late 1960s, playing on Channel 2's "Show del Mediodia" and "La Discoteca Pepsi" with Chucho Avellanet and Lissette. ...Ay Visnen Santa!

DEAR DJ... I moved to the U.S. when I was 24. That was 7 years ago. My daughter at the time was 5. When we came here she did not speak English at all. When she started school the teachers had to talk to her in signs. About 3 months later she started to speak English. About 6 months later I married a "gringo". Guess what? She forgot to speak Spanish since I had to speak English in the house because my now ex-husband didn't speak Spanish. What do you think I should do to teach her. Every time I try she gets so frustrated. I just think there's got to be a way and I don't know if I have the patience. ---Big Bubbles PR

Dear Bubbles... She didn't forget Spanish (not completely)... It's there in the back of her mind... She's not into it because her whole environment is in English. Pretty soon she'll start snapping her fingers on her face and say: “Wassuuup?”.... Then it will be almost useless to try to instill Spanish into her, since none of her “homies” will be speaking it.

Start speaking Spanish to her now!!! The translate it if she didn't get it. Use reverse psychology... use Spanish to "talk about her" to your hubby (even if he says: ”Huh?”). Listen to PR music in Spanish. Watch the news and other shows in the Spanish channel... MAKE THAT a PART of YOUR LIFE... Be serious about it. She'll get the message.

Pa' encima... pues!!
A la orden,

Hi Don Jibaro
I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your story about Tio Genaro. What an amazing man he was. I had tears in my eyes by the time I finished reading the story. You see my Abuelo Manolo who is 107 years young also is blind due to Glaucoma. He became blind in his nineties and up until then he attended his finca which had a bull and some chickens.

I loved to work and once he became blind fused that he would still be working if it weren't for his blindness. His memory is no longer what it used to be and his mind wanders very quickly but when I went to see him this summer he sang songs from his era and held on to me tight not wanting to let me go. Abuelo is a New Year's Baby so he will turn 108 on January 1, 2010. After reading about your Tio, I absolutely had to share my Abuelo with you.

You have become a friend with all of your stories and information. I feel as if I have known you for a life time. May you and your family have a wonderful Christmas and may the New Year bring much joy and happiness but most of all good health.

Feliz Navidad

Mr. Jíbaro,
"As I read your testimonial, I thought it was so sad, and yet so sweet, the way God puts forgiveness in our hearts... Only our celestial papi could let bygones be bygones... We died with him in the cross and we resurrected in our minds and bodies, along with him... Because Christ died and lived again we inherited his mind: un espíritu de amor, de poder y de dominio propio. I declare you blessed with such all encompassing blessing. Thank you for sharing your hurt with honesty and humbleness." V. Prieto

DJ: Thanks for your kind words... I'm not alone in this nightmare... millions are suffering today and nobody knows about it... I've been going to the Rescue Mission, with my kids... We get "happy meals" and give 'em out. My daughter came back this summer
from a Missionary trip to CUBA! See her report here http://jibaros.com/cuba.htm

Much Love, Peace
and Prosperity to you,

DON J...
Seeing the Sato story reminded me of the cat I saved from the San Juan harbor. I was on the Coast Guard boat and we were preparing to get underway. I saw this cat float by and it looked dead. I thought how can someone be so cruel? Then about 5 or 10 minutes later I hear loud YOUWLING comming from under the dock. I looked under the dock and saw this cat clinging to a pilon screaming.

So I got in the skiff we used to paint the side of the boat and got the fish net and went under the dock. It took about 15 or 20 minutes of convincing but the cat finally let go and tangled himself up in the net. I got him on the dock and naturally he was very upset and scared so he kept tangling up in the net even more.

I just sat there patiently looking into his eyes and saying "I'm helping you to survive... calm down... I won't hurt you." Finally he went limp and allowed me to untangle him from the net. Once he was free I dried him off with a towel and said "GO, be safe"... He stood there for a moment and then took off like a shot!

We had to get underway and were gone for about a month. When we got back I saw the cat once or twice on the Coast Guard base. He came by the ship and stopped and looked at me. I looked back and waved at him. He was telling me thank you...

Don't know which are your reference books. If any college degree, academic background or research ability GIBARO/JIBARO is a hick, illiterate, peasant, farmer, living in the country side versus the city.

Unfortunately some people of Puerto Rico, living/dreaming of the past:sugar cane/tobacco, coffee agricultural past, believe that being illiterate, in poor health,
living in a shack made of palm trees. With a roof of palm leaves, floors/walls made with palm trunks, is something to be proud of.Dress in rags, walking barefooted et ce tera et ce tera.

Forgive me lord for not being proud of being a hick. By the wasy they never used blue jeans but kakhi and sorry...NO PAVAS ..either.

Don Jibaro:
JÍBAROS ARE
 NOT HICKS !!!

Mira... oye, MANDULETE the word JIBARO from the SHUAR lingo for JIVARO... He lived in the Amazon area shrinking human (enemy) heads (tsantsas). They traveled to the islands, like the CARIBs, looking for humans to decapitate and eat their brains (they thought to acquire the strength   the deceased)

They fled to our mountains 'cus the CARIBs were more dangerous than they were (eating the enemy while he was alive...) Coño, chico!

Later the criollos were born to the Spain hijos de &%@* and the humble jibarito went to the mountains to escape the evil Spaniards, thus "jibaro" became synonym for "campesino" ergo.' the mountain dweller..

Mira, hijjo de la &^%$, they fought for their honor by taking a pañuelo (handkerfief) tying one hand to the opponents hand, then they go at it "a puro machetazo". YOU DON'T WANNA MEET a REAL JIBARO, ignorante, cuz he will make ground beef outta you before you can say "ay bendito"
